Frequently Asked Questions

  • A NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) assessment measures the energy efficiency of your home’s design. In Victoria, a minimum 7-star rating is required for new builds. We provide clear reports that help you meet compliance without delays.

  • Most standard residential projects can be turned around in 3–5 business days once we have your drawings. Larger or more complex developments may take longer, but we always keep you updated on timelines.

  • We work with both. Whether you’re a homeowner planning a new build, or an architect needing Section J or BESS reports, we tailor our services to your needs.

  • As of May 2024, new homes in Victoria must meet a minimum 7-Star NatHERS rating (up from 6 stars). The rules also include updated “Whole of Home” energy use budget standards covering fixed appliances (like heating/cooling, hot water, lighting etc.). These changes mean designers need to think more broadly about energy performance, not just insulation and glazing.

  • Mostly, NatHERS assessments are mandatory for new homes under Victorian regulations. Renovations may or may not require them depending on how much the renovation changes the thermal envelope, windows, roof, etc. If your renovation significantly alters heating/cooling loads or insulation, councils can require a NatHERS certificate to ensure compliance. (If in doubt, we can do a quick check on your plans.)

  • Costs vary depending on size and complexity. For a standard new residential home, expect anywhere from AUD $300-$800 (or more for larger or complex designs). Turnaround times are usually 3-5 business days after receiving full plans. If there are revisions or unusual design features, that may take longer. Quoting happens once we know your plans, materials, glazing etc. Some consultants provide express options. (Prices and times can vary by consultant.)

  • No problem — many projects require some tweaking in design. We can review your design and suggest improvements: better insulation, glazing adjustments, shading features, passive solar strategies etc. We can work iteratively, re-model, until it meets the required standard without unnecessary cost. This back-and-forth is normal. We aim to provide cost-effective solutions that fit within your design intent and budget.

  • The “Whole of Home” assessment evaluates not just the building shell (walls, roof, windows, insulation), but also the fixed appliances (heating/cooling systems, hot water, lighting, etc.), and any expected on-site renewable generation (like solar panels). It’s now part of NCC 2022 requirements in Victoria, working alongside the 7-star rating, to provide a more complete picture of a home’s energy use. This means more of the home’s systems will be included in the energy modelling than in older assessments. (Source: NatHERS FAQs)

  • Only assessors/accredited energy raters who are registered under NatHERS (or similar recognised bodies) can issue certified reports. When choosing, look for: local experience (familiar with Victorian regulations and councils), transparent pricing, clear turnaround time, and good communication. If an assessor is certified and uses up-to-date software tools, you’re safer from delays or unexpected compliance problems.

  • To complete an assessment, we typically need full floor plans, elevations, sections, details about insulation, glazing/window types, orientation of the home, roof details and materials, fixed appliances if required for Whole-of-Home rating, and climate zone (which we’ll help you with). The more detailed and accurate your documentation, the smoother and quicker the assessment. Some consultants require these before they can offer a quote.

  • Yes — while one of the main uses of energy efficiency / NatHERS assessments is ensuring compliance (building permits, council approval), a secondary but very important benefit is long-term cost savings. By improving insulation, optimising glazing, choosing efficient systems, you reduce heating and cooling loads, which lowers utility bills. Also, homes with strong energy efficiency credentials may be more attractive to buyers or renters.
